This was my first show in 2011 and I am featuring some tracks from the best of 2010 albums. This is part one and part two will be on NFR on the 21st Jan!

In addition to my favs from 2010 I wish to pay a musical tribute to a real Soul singer who sadly passed away on the 26th December. I had been following Teena's career since the late 70's and cherish every album she made including the fabulous 'Congo Square' from 2009. Her last studio album??

Last Friday I put together my own personal tribute to the band that I have been following since the early 70's!

In the beginning we heard the 'radio friendly' stuff that shot them to fame and International stardom. Only much later did I discover the real EWF from their early jazz and funk influenced albums showcasing the amazing craftsmanship of their talent.

You didn't hear 'September' or 'Boogie Wonderland' and those tracks certainly had their place but rather some selected tracks and also their influence on other artists and bands as producers or co-writers!

DJ-JFK's One That Got Away!

A great little album of jazz funk and the only record we’ve ever seen by this group! The 3 Pieces may not have lasted long in the record business, but this rare album from 1975 has made them legends on the rare groove scene for years. The record was cut during the height of the jazz funk years at Fantasy Records and it features Donald Byrd handling the production chores, in a similar manner to the style that he used with the more famous Blackbyrds, who were also recording for Fantasy the time. The record features loads of electric piano and ARP, plus some tight and smooth guitar, and a nice rolling groove that is very catchy. A number of tracks have vocals in kind of a subdued soul mode and tracks include the groove classics “Backed Up Against The Wall”, “Shortnin’ Bread”, “Concrete Jungle”, and “Vibes Of Truth”. And believe it or not, there aren’t any vibes on the album!
